EAST VILLAGE PUBLIC WASHROOM

EAST VILLAGE PUBLIC WASHROOMS
Calgary, Alberta

The East Village Public Washrooms are a transparent architectural form that is at once landscape and building. It is present and hollow. Anchored in utility, animated by activity. Pairing a public washroom program with the fastest growing sport in North America in the form of a free outdoor public pickleball court, located in Calgary’s East Village, demonstrates that this is a vibrant, liveable urban neighborhood for a range of ages, abilities, and vulnerabilities. The East Village Public Washrooms are a colourful neighbour, filled with play, visually and formally striking, clever and active.

The East Village Public Washrooms have been designed as a panelized, demountable structure, to allow for ease of repair, and deconstruction at the end of its lifecycle. Readily re-usable and or recyclable, galvanized steel, is used predominantly throughout the structure. Interior finishes have been selected for their durability, and low-VOC content. Powerful low-flush stainless steel toilets and a Corian trough sink have been used for durability, longevity, and recyclability. Other considerations include the use of LED light fixtures and easy to maintain site surfaces.
